The Womb – Recreation of Life

The design is rooted in the concept of Karuppai (womb), symbolizing protection, nurturing, and rebirth. The building is conceived as a healing enclosure for individuals struggling with drug addiction, supporting their psychological and emotional recovery through space and form.

Concept

At the heart of the project lies a central courtyard, representing the symbolic womb and acting as the life-giving core. This courtyard connects all major spaces through permeable open brick walls, while introducing natural light, cross-ventilation, and greenery—elements that reinforce growth, renewal, and hope. The spatial journey mirrors the healing process itself, transitioning from enclosed, protective environments to calmer, more open spaces. Natural elements are integrated as essential healing components, strengthening the therapeutic atmosphere and restoring a renewed sense of life, dignity, and belonging.
